How I Play Makena North

Makena North is one of my favorite golf courses in Hawaii and I've played almost all of them in my 30 years as a golf professional. The most identifiable reason is the awesome beauty and private setting of this outstanding golf course.

About 8 years ago Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed nine new holes to the original front nine. The new nine were located above and north of the original 9 so it got its name, The North Course.

Having played this course hundreds of times, I never get tried of its demanding test of great golf and the panoramic ocean views of four islands from the upper back side. It's located in a unique area on Maui below the Ulapalakua ranch and near the Wailea Resort but has a country feel… far away from the developments you'll find at most Hawaiian resorts.

Biographical Note: Clif Council is a 52-year old PGA Pro who, with wife Martha, owns Maui Golf Shop in Kihei. He's one of the top ten senior golfers in Hawaii and has won four Long Drive contests on Maui in the Senior Division. He averages about 250-275 yards with his Nike driver and hits a 7 iron about 150 yards
