Makena North
Hole 14

620 yards
Par 5
This is a great golf hole... 620 yards, Maui's second longest hole, a double dog leg. You tee off on top of the world overlooking the entire Makena coastline with panoramic 180 degree views of South Maui, West Maui (looking like a separate island), Lanai, Kahoolawe and little Molokini with all the dive boats around it. And yes, in Winter, whales popping up now the then. A series of 3 bunkers guard the left side and only drives of 290 can carry the last bunker to give a long hitter a chance to go for the green, about 280-260 left from a downhill lie. Best to lay up short of the huge bunker about 80 yds. from the green. The green is very large and 3 putting is easy unless you get on the near the hole. Enjoy the great views, downhill drive, long lay up shot and short to middle irons into one of Makena biggest greens. Par is.

Drove it well near the bunkers and laid up with a 7 wood to 134. Played an 8 iron to the middle and 2 putted for par.

Best Tip: Stay right of the bunkers but don't slice as fairway falls away from the cart path. After a safe drive, play a long iron or easy fairway wood downhill into the valley, a 200 yard shot. This leaves a 130 yd. iron shot. If the pin is back, take an extra club. Be happy with par.

Note: This is my favorite par five for a couple of reasons: Once, with the trade wind blowing across, I hit a drive that ended up 108 yards from the green! Yes, a drive of 512 yards. It must of rolled 200 yards to the bottom of the valley. Secondly, I made an eagle 3 here a couple months ago in our weekly Wednesday Skins Game with a driver, 3 iron to 3 feet and made $1,000.
