Makena Stables is
owned and operated by Patrick and Helaine Borge. Since 1983, Makena Stables
offers much more than "just a trailride." We offer a unique riding opportunity
for you to saddle up and ride with the owner of the stables, a Maui born
paniolo (cowboy) whose knowledge and aloha for the aina
(land) and his horses shines through on each tour.
We have exceptional quality horses, many raised and trained by us. And because we really love what we do, this shows in the care of the horses and in the quality of your experience. We match each person to their horse by ability and offer help and lessons as needed to each rider sharing our insight into the animals that you will be getting to know.
Our groups are small to keep things friendly and interesting for everyone. All of our rides are on Ulupalakua Ranch, 20,000 acres of some of the most beautiful wild land on Maui, overlooking the Ahihi-Kinau Reserve and La Perouse Bay, which offer spectacular views of the most recent lava flow and the outer islands.
Enjoy quick glimpses of Axis deer and other wildlife. During the winter months, we are graced by great views of whales below in La Perouse Bay. Bring your camera, for some great shots.

The original and still the best sunset ride on Maui. This is simply a lovely time of day to ride, with cooler trade wind breezes and golden late afternoon sunlight sparkling on the sea. The panoramic sunsets can be just breathtaking. Climb up winding trails through the slopes of Ulupalakua Ranch, exploring the hills overlooking La Perouse Bay. The expansive views of lava, ocean and wild lands will make you feel as though you're the only person on Maui.
This ride has a variety of terrain and trails, and will challenge even the most experienced riders. An awesome ride, and surely the most memorable experience of your visit.
This ride includes a refreshment break with fresh fruits, assorted snacks and bottled water, up at the most spectacular viewpoint on Maui, Kalua O Lapa.

2 1/2 Hour Morning Ride: 8:00 am - 11:30 am
A moderately challenging ride suitable for most level of riders. Two hours of riding time with a 1/2 hour refreshment break of fresh fruits, a variety of snacks and bottled water. Riders are matched by size and ability to an appropriate horse. Lessons provided for individual riders as needed by the owner/trainer. The ride climbs to Kalua O Lapa, the vent formed by the last eruption on Maui. A truly spectacular ride with panoramic views of of the southern slope of Haleakala, the lava fields of La Perouse Bay and the islands of Hawai'i, Kaho'olawe, Molokini, Lanai and Molokai. The expansive views will make you feel you're the only person on Maui. Breathtaking!

For the past 21 years we have offered personalized riding tours to our guests along with individual lessons on happy, healthy horses. While you don't really need a private ride to have a quality experience, for those who prefer the smaller group size we offer our Morning or Sunset rides as private tours for families, friends or couples for a very special adventure.

1/2 Hour Private Morning Ride
T he ride climbs to Kalua O Lapa, the vent formed by the last eruption
on Maui. A truly spectacular ride with panoramic views of of the southern
